I chose Tom because I felt I was able to connect with his story. He was so compelling to listen to because I thought he explained his feelings of loneliness very well. He made me understand that there will be times in a person’s life in which he or she feels very alone, and very small. However, he was able to use those feelings in a positive way by realizing that although he felt alone, he realized that he was just a small part of something very big.
ReplyDeleteHe practiced transcendentalism by understanding and accepting the conflicts in his life and learning to deal with them. He somehow overcame his feelings of loneliness by being alone and thinking independently, as most transcendentalists would. He did not end up distracting himself from his problems. Instead, he thought about them and faced them head on. He did what he would as a child. He drove off to be alone somewhere and look up at the sky. He let his thoughts wander about in his mind, and came to the understanding of his situation. As a result, he was able to understand more about himself and his life.

My character is Milos and what is so compelling about him is that he is facing the reality of a death; the death of his dog. The significance of the death is that the dog he had was the only being keeping him from loneliness. I can relate because when my dog passed away I didn't want to accept it and I couldn't accept it for a long time. I gravitate towards Milos because in a sense we went though something similar. I had to face and accept the death of her just as Milos faced and accepted the death of his dog willingly.
ReplyDeleteMilos practiced transcendentalism because he went from being in denial to accepting that his dog was gone and he was truly alone. Milos didn't want to accept the dog's death because he didn't want to be alone. If the dog had died he would really be alone. He accepted loneliness when he accepted his dog's death.

ReplyDeleteI chose Milos. I’m not really sure why, but I really felt like that segment hit me. I supposed it had to do something with animals. It was sad to see that he only had his dog left and then it went away. It just caused him to be more lonely. I honestly don’t want that happening to my dog or end up lonely with the thought that I had just lost something through an unexplained death. I probably would have hallucinated, too. Milos, however, didn’t really show transcendentalism. He went against it. He tried getting away from reality and didn’t want to accept the fact that his dog was indeed dead. He didn’t want to see the hallucinations of the deaths of his dog. He just wanted to get away from all the pain.
I think Lynn is so compelling because she had the experience of being in a crowd, she starts to realize she needs to be alone. I think she’s practicing transcendentalism by wanting to be on her own. She doesn’t let anyone or anything distract her because she feel like they won’t do any good for her. She said that she made friends, but not connections, and I feel like she said that because she built a wall so high that it’s hard for anyone to come in and for herself to get out. Her experience with crowds made her want to not be apart of it. She wanted privacy, but was never given it, so her craving for it made it a priority, leading her into a lonely life. Lynn is willing to sacrifice her life to live her life the way she have always wanted to.

The character that I have chosen is Pamela. What I find so compelling about this character is that she had this same boring routine, and then one night she stepped out of her box to follow the group of people who were doing illegal activities. This showed that she wasn’t afraid to try something new, exciting, and potentially dangerous. Although tagging along with that group of people wasn’t such a good idea, it helped Pamela learn more about herself. She no longer did any illegal activities, hung out with the wrong crowd, and was able to discover her passion about art. It took her starting out rough to be filled with inner happiness.

I choose Tom because he describes how in his entire life that has been trying to please people just so that he could accepted. Tom struggles just to fit in with society, which I’m pretty sure that most people do even up today. Tom isn’t the only person that has ever felt out of place, many people in this world are still trying to fit in, which is something that we all can relate to. How Tom practiced Transcendentalism is that he learned to accept who is and not to try to be what other people would expect of him. Tom began to feel proud and happy about who he is and that he shouldn’t worry about what other people think of him.

I think is compelling about guy who can't really fit in a group of different perspectives. He tries to accumulate himself into them however, he turns out to be left out and feels like an complete outsider that know one cares about and seem like they don't even notice him.
ReplyDeleteOne thing the character practice the role of transcendentalism is that he's the one the acts different from everybody else even though he tries to fit in. He see's himself in a lonely world of his and starts doing things that he enjoys feels good about.

The Character I felt like I connected with the most is Milos, the director who lost his dog. His story was hit me kinda hard because I too have my own personal dog that i can call my own. What he went through is something that I hope i don't face a long time, he lost his companion. It's hard to find a person who would love you as much as a dog would. They fall in love with you as you are with them. He had to face this horrible event and sit down and deal with it. He couldn't really run anywhere or try to get rid of it. There's no way. He had to face it even though he first tried to cover the wound with rounds of solitaire. He practiced transcendentalism because he had to overcome having that companion. He has to mentally let go to an era of friendship. Someone who he loved a lot. And in order to do this you need to do some self reflecting and practice self reliance, which he did when he was mourning his dogs death.

1.) The most compelling character in my point of view is Milos. I chose Milos because his story was saddening how his dog died. He could not accept that his dog died after it got lost because he did not want to believe it. He didn't want to accept reality and played games like solitaire to keep his mind off of it. He struggles to accept that his dog died when he saw it in the pond outside of his house.
ReplyDelete2.) Milos practices transcendentalism in his personal life because he struggles to accept that his dog died. He did not want to accept that his dog died so he turned away and distracted himself from seeing the truth when he saw his dog in the pond. Milos practices transcendentalism by accepting that his dog passed away and that it wasn't an illusion he saw on the pond. He struggles to believe it was either an illusion he saw, or the truth. In the end, Milos accepted that his dog was trapped and died under the pond.
I have chosen Pamela because her life is very lonely she goes to work and goes home everyday the only fun she had was walking home , until she found friends who painted on walls and she got a rush from doing this and in a way i can relate to that rush she would get because when i was younger i was pretty lonely being the new kid in middle school then i got into a group of new friends and we go out late nights and do the same , but even though her exceitment did not last long seeing her friends got caught she found a new way to keep herself busy even though shes alone by painting alone at home and expressing her feelings.
ReplyDeleteShe practiced transcendentalism by being alone to society everyday she never followed a trend , she found happiness in her own way through some life changing experience , she was an individual living on what she worked for , not for what was handed to her and she accepted her new life style despite being alone.

To me, Milos was the most compelling because he uses his dog to confide in. To me it doesnt necessarily have to be and animal it can be many other things. When Milos's dog dies he plays solitaire to get it off his mind. Ive done the same thing in my loss to try and distract myself from the matter.
ReplyDeleteWithout knowing it he played solitaire to distract his mind from the lake but came to the realization that if it really is his dog he should deal with it. But until he makes that realization he just kept on playing solitaire. To me he uses trancendentalism by figuring out that distractions are the best way for him to get over his problems and temporarily forget about them.

ReplyDeleteThe character that I chose was Pamela. I think what makes her so compelling is the fact that she felt lonely with bored with her life so she decided she had to do something. Since she had nobody to live for, everyday was the same routine over and over again, it made her feel lost in and insignificant. The way that she “practiced” transcendentalism was that she went out to find herself and what she wanted to do. She didn’t like the way her life was going so she felt the need to change it.

I would say that Tom is somewhat like me because people want me to be something I’m not and judge me because of that. They’ll invite me to places I don’t want to go and try and change who I am just because I’m not like everybody else. Tom’s is connected to transcendentalism because he was pushed into a crowd and he found himself to be unlike everybody else.

What's overpowering about my character is that she got lonely when she was around a lot of people. Its amazing how she didn’t develop a relationship with her older siblings.Another thing thats compelling from my character is that she never mentions her love life. Lynn practiced transcendentalism by being lonely most of the time and being scared of the society she was in. In her words she called it The jungle. She got very isolated after she moved to different country’s. For example she says I could make friends anywhere but never wanted to get attached to them because i didn’t want to be crowded again.

I was fascinated by Tom’s story because of the way he thinks about life. I found it interesting that Tom felt like an outsider because of the way he thinks. He feels like nobody cares about the things he cares about. This a problem a lot of people feel is that the things that they care about others don’t care for and this cause people to feel alone. He later reflects on his life and finds in himself that he is a small part of something larger and that everyone is needed in some way.Tom practiced transcendentalism by reflecting upon his life and discovering the meaning behind himself.

I chose Pamela because she caught my interest just based on what she did to try to fit in with other people. She had a very basic lifestyle and it was also very consistent throughout her days. I felt as if she tried to do something she wasn't really fit for. For example, she hung out with the wrong people and it just didn't look right because of who she really was. Pamela tagged and vandalized walls with spray paint cans and was often looking behind her shoulder. It was a thrill and had her paranoid for the most part.
ReplyDeleteShe realized that after her friends got arrested, she needed to stop doing what she did with them and focus on her work. She was smart enough to not lose her job over what she was doing on the side. In a way, she practiced transcendentalism since she isolated herself away from the bad things she was doing. Pamela understood the wrong doings and fixed herself. This helped her strengthen her to become more independent without having to be a different person.
Tom is the most compelling character to me. He reminds me so much of myself. I always try to find a way to fit in, but I never can fit in a group because no one shares my thoughts. Tom uses transcendentalism by dealing with his life conflicts and realizing that he should be his own person. Whenever Tom is at a crowded area such as a party, he would feel like a tree in the background; however, he finds out that his life is important if he believes so.
ReplyDeleteI think that Domingo was the most compelling to me because he tried to fit into society by changing himself to look and act in a way that everyone else will approve of. Then he notices his mistakes and tries to "change into himself." I think that this was somewhat interesting since I believe that most people will eventually go through this.
ReplyDeleteDomingo practiced transcendentalism through noticing his mistakes in life and looking for a way to find his true self, then begins to live his life in a way that best suits him.
I thought Domingo was the most compelling because he lived his life the way he wanted too. He didn’t really care much about how much he spent. The bad part is that he was too distracted by his possessions, and that’s what lead to his downfall in the end. I also admired how he eventually accepted his own mistakes, and he no longer wanted that luxurious lifestyle. Domingo was happy with a simple lifestyle and he didn’t take the small things for granted anymore.
ReplyDeleteDomingo cared too much what people thought of him, so he had to act and dress a certain way. He also didn’t really fit in with anybody, so he decided to move to Australia. Domingo then became wealthy and he was distracted by that wealth. He also realized what he did wrong, and he accepts that he doesn’t need wealth to be happy.
The character from the film that was most compelling to me was Domingo. Domingo was never satisfied and happy with his life. He was very successful at one point in his life, but in a blink of an eye all his success was gone. Domingo was so distracted with what he had that he did not notice what his success was doing to him. He had to change completely who he was in order to fit in a certain group. But as soon as he sticks with the basic necessities in life and became his true self, he became happy and content with his life and what he had. I relate to Domingo because I feel with all this technology and information that is given to us, it distracts me with what my real opinions and feelings are. But when I put everything aside and just be me, I can think more clearly and figure out what I truly feel and who I really am.
ReplyDeleteDomingo practiced transcendentalism in his life by pushing aside who he was pretending to be. Domingo shoved the things that were given to him and he just kept what he really needed to survive. Domingo in the end realized that he just had to be himself in order to be happy. He also realized that he doesn’t always have to follow other people when he can just follow his own opinions, his own feelings, and his own wantings. He began to state his feelings and opinions. Domingo also realized that it’s okay to be alone for all you really need is yourself to be happy. But it is your choice and actions if you want to be happy.
My chosen character is Domingo. I found Doming compelling because his compulsive addiction to material objects as a way to fill the emptiness he’s felt throughout his life ends up ruining his life and causing him to realize that he needs to re-evaluate his place in the world and how he views not only himself, but his own life. Even when he had a lot of money and could afford beautiful clothes, cars and expensive apartments, he still wasn’t happy. In the end he ended up wasting all his money, and having to return to his parents, broke and ashamed. Many people believe that money and material possessions will make you happy or fill the emptiness you feel inside from being ashamed of yourself and who you are. This belief is dangerous because it begins to rule your life and control you. You live your life only with the purpose of making money to have nice things, and use this as a way to prove your own self value to yourself and those around you. It creates the ideology in your own mind that only because you have nice things are you actually worth something. When Domingo finally realizes that the material possessions never made him happy, and they aren’t something he needs to wants to live his life, he is exercising a form of transcendentalism. Transcendentalists believe that buying into this idea of needing material objects to make yourself happy or to prove your self-worth is a way of conforming, of giving into what society thinks of you and adapting to that thought process. You lose your individuality when you do this because you’re living your life to put on a show for others and show them how much you’re worth through something superficial and materialistic.

What i found compelling about Lynn was that her whole childhood she was surrounded by people and family, but she always felt alone. Since there was always so many people around she felt like she didn’t have any time to think about herself or write. The only time she had to talk, was when she was alone at home with her mom, but she still didn’t feel as though she fit in. Where she lived she had to be brave, and she was not, so she felt like she could not talk to anybody around her. What made Lynn a transcendentalist was that she made her own decision to go live in the suburbs and make of her life what she wanted to. Even though when Lynn moved, physically she was more alone, she felt more connected to herself. Not be surrounded by so many people let her think more deeply and was able to write better.
ReplyDeleteIn the short film, A Room Nearby, by Paul and Sandra Fierlinger, I believe that the most compelling character in my opinion is Tom for several reasons. Personally, the reasoning behind why I chose Tom is simply because he’s been through similar situations to what I’ve been thinking about the past couple of years. Tom feels out of place in the world, and suffers feelings of loneliness and isolation. However, he doesn’t just run away from his problems; he handles them. He eventually reflects upon his way of living in a positive way; he emphasizes that his life has meaning and is an although he’s just a person out of a billion others, he’s just as important as everyone else.
ReplyDeleteWhether he knew it or not, Tom practiced transcendentalism in many ways. For instance, Tom dealt with his situations critically rather than running away from them. Tom managed to think independently and not base it upon other people’s thoughts. Tom thought in a way in which he doesn’t allow anyone else to influence his beliefs. He uses his independent thoughts to deal with his problems and fix them; this shaped him to become the person he currently is.
I chose Lynn because it interests me that although she was always crowded by people, whether it be her siblings or people in the town, she constantly felt a pang of loneliness. She describes living with little space because of her many siblings and never having any true privacy, even when her family moved to a place with more rooms.
ReplyDeleteI think that she practiced transcendentalism when she realized that she needed to be alone, truly alone, with nobody else around. Lynn wanted so badly to step away from the sea of people that when she did, she realized it was just as lonely. She wouldn’t let people distract her because she assumed they wouldn’t do her any good. On her own, she could leave the town and make a new home someplace else but besides having relocated several times, home to her was still the place where she grew up.

To me, I think the most compelling character is Pamela. She didn't think being lonely felt right, so she started being around the wrong type of people. She let them influence her and change her lifestyle. At first, she thought everything felt so right and what she was doing [vandalizing] was totally her thing. That was until she had to run away from the police to save herself and leave two of her friends behind to get arrested. After that, she realized that vandalizing is not her thing and everything was wrong, but she didn't want to let her art experience from vandalizing go to waste. She went to the lifestyle she started with. Instead of going out in the streets and vandalize others' property, she makes her art in her own apartment...alone.
ReplyDeleteThe most compelling character in my opinion is Pamela. Pamela found excitement in her life when she started to do graffiti all around her town after work. She stepped outside of her comfort zone to try something she hasn’t done before. I find her compelling because I can relate to her. When I’m bored and I don’t know what to do, I try to find activities that will bring a sense of adrenaline in me, even if there are consequences involved. I also try to do something new and exciting I haven’t done before just to see if I like it or not. Pamela practices transcendentalism by trying out new experiences. When Pamela was bored with her daily routine, she decided to do something illegal. She found out that she enjoys graffiti and has a passion for it. Transcendentalism is about trying new things just for the experience. In the end, Pamela found out what she loves the most, and that is creating art.
ReplyDeleteFor my character, I chose Pamela. I chose Pamela, because she did some risky stuff, for excitement. I also chose Pamela, because I somewhat like to take risks, and that I could somewhat relate to her. Pamela practiced transcendentalism by experiencing new things, and also by taking risks. By her doing something different from her usual schedule, she gains something new in experience. While she was taking risks, she did things that she never did, and got to have some excitement that she has been wanting.
ReplyDeleteI chose Pamela because she would go about her day with the same routines, and that made me relate a bit with the fact that my lifestyle was always the same old routine. She tried to fit in with a certain crowd and wanted to stand out. What caught my attention was that she chose to fit with the group that was not good. She also caught my attention when she would intentionally take the longer route home just because she didn't want to be home alone longer.
ReplyDeleteI think Pamela practiced transcendentalism by trying to understand herself. When she was by herself, she was able to reflect on her actions and chose to stop doing graffiti.

1 & 2.) Domingo is the only character that I can relate to. Domingo let the physical things in life consume him. In this day in age with technology booming and material things being so important in our society, it is difficult to not want or even feel the need for more stuff. As soon as Domingo became rich, he let money, greed and material items get the best of him. Sure, he was happy while he had physical items to comfort him, but once his money was gone, he let a great loneliness. Sometimes I myself have trouble not letting the world get to me, I live in this world, but I am not of this world. Meaning that the things of the world should not matter to me, because when I die, none of it will matter. My legacy will not be how much stuff I had, I want my legacy to be how many people I helped and how many people I made smile. Domingo realized how badly greed was impacting his life, and he decided that it was time to give up the want for things. He began to realize that he should fill himself with joy and happiness and people, rather than money and alcohol. This shows transcendentalism because instead of wanting to please the world, he pleases himself. Thats what transcendentalism is all about. Its about doing what you know is right, not what the world thinks is right.

From A Room Nearby, I thought that the character of Pamela was very compelling. Before she gets into painting, Pamela has a very consistent life, in which she goes through the same routine everyday. It was interesting that she said that the most fun part of her day was her walk back home. It seems as if she really needed some sort of excitement and thrill in her life. She found this by meeting a group of people that were graffiti artists. She befriends them and starts to paint her own graffiti with them. I think more than the thrill itself, she found that she had a passion for painting. However, at the time she probably felt like she didn’t know any other way to express this passion. As a result she continued to take part in something that was illegal.
I think Pamela practiced transcendentalism in her life when she realized her passion for painting. She knew that what she was doing was illegal, but she continued to do graffiti because that is what she wanted to do. It didn’t matter to her what the authority figures of the city thought of her actions. I also think that she practiced transcendentalism when she continued to paint after her friends got caught. Although she changed her method of painting, she continued to because she really enjoyed it.
The character I chose is Pamela because of her life-changing experience. Her story was compelling to listen to because she decided to take action when she was lonely. Although at first she lived life repetitively, she decided to step out of her shell and connect with others who were also doing things she was interested in. Instead of isolating herself, she found a new interest in life and moved towards it. By stepping out of her comfort zone, Pamela was able to try something new, and she ended up loving it.
ReplyDeleteShe practiced transcendentalism by going with her emotions instead of self doubting herself. Pamela took interest in graffiti and decided to tag along with a group of friends who shared a common interest. Instead of holding herself back because it wasn’t legal, Pamela did it anyway. Although her friends got caught in the end, she incorporated graffiti into a way where it was legal and she could do it for her own entertainment. She went out to discover her true self instead of living with the same routine and holding back her interests.
One compelling character that really stood out from the other characters has to be Tom. He went through a situation that many people are going through right now which is that he was struggling to fit into society. He feels that his different because he of the way he thinks; that nobody cares about the things he cares about. He explained to me that in everyone’s life there will be a time they will be lonely or alone, but that they should stay positive because they are not the only person out there that is also lonely and it will get better.
ReplyDeleteTom practiced transcendentalism by overcoming his problems when he was alone and thinking on his own like how most transcendentalists would also do. He realizes he should be his own person and not have to mold himself after others. Tom discovers that he can remain happy if he stays himself.

I think that Domingo has an interesting story because at some point in his life he was feeling lonely and he wasn't able to find himself in the society therefore he turned into an alcoholic person. Until, he was drafted by Uncle Sam to travel out of the country which somewhat changed his life. He finally opened up and made new friends. I can relate to Domingo because in times of feeling sadness we turn to the things we don’t need to make us happy.
ReplyDeleteDomingo practiced transcendentalism by evaluating his mistakes and overcoming his struggles in life. He wanted to fit in the society therefore he wanted to recreate his image. When he was rich, he finally realized that he doesn't need all the things he has to make himself happy.
What i found interesting about Pamella was that she was a graffiti artist. It was amazing how she found her passion through drawing. She was a very lonely person having to repeat a robotic lifestyle, but some graffiti artist had inspired her. Even though Pamella knew she was doing something wrong, it was the first time she broke out of her robotic lifestyle. Then she soon realized her felonies and finally got back to her regular life, but adding art to her routine.
ReplyDeletePamella practiced transcendentalism by trying to fit into a crowd of people. Pamella was tired of being lonely, so she tried to fit into any group she can find. Luckily she found a group of people who had a common interest in what she liked. Pamella also used her graffiti artwork to get her mind off of her robotic routines in order to feel less lonely.

I feel the character Milos is most compelling for several reasons. one reason is, i have a dog and i can relate to the bond he had with it. I could imaging losing my dog, and it would be very hard especially knowing that he struggle. (getting drowned inst peaceful)
ReplyDeleteMilos I think does the opposite of transcendentalism in the beginning when he 1st saw his dog underwater. he is in denial that his dog died and plays solitaire to cover up what he really feels. In the end though, he finally accepted it by calling people to get the dog out, but i cant remember if he starts to play solitaire or not. if he did, that's not transcendentalism, if he doesn't it is.
The character I was compelled by was Pamela because she started out as a person who had the same boring routine everyday and changed greatly after hanging out with these guys who participated in illegal activities. After doing this activity for a while, her personality changed because she felt like she fit in this group because she was comfortable painting graffiti. But after an incident of her friends getting caught up, Pamela became afraid and went back to her old routine and found her passion for art. She learned that not being a part of this group and being lonely, painting her own art made her happy.

I think that Tom is the most compelling character because I could connect with his story. Not necessarily about the wealth, but just the fact that I don’t feel like I fit in with some people in my family. Tom has this rich and wealthy family, but he never felt like he belonged. He made me feel reassured Even though he tried to fit in, he never could. Later on, Tom admits the fact that it’s okay not to fit in.
ReplyDeleteHis situation reminded me of Emerson’s quote, “My life is not an apology, but a life.” The reason is because you’re not supposed to apologize for the actions that you do for the sake of other people’s opinion. You don’t live to please everybody. It’s okay to be different.

Pamela is a very compelling character because of the fact that she found herself in something that was totally beyond her normal lifestyle. She disliked her lifestyle of living each day the same way as the last with the same routine that was unchanging. She was unable to express herself because of her constant regular routine. Her apartment was very lonely which is why she would always take the long way home. The fact that her decision of indulging in graffiti wasn't a mistake but merely helped her to realize who she was through art.
ReplyDeletePamela practiced Transcendentalism by changing up her lifestyle and doing what others considered “bad.” She was stuck in an apartment that forced her to sit and think about the choices she had made and that it was a way to express herself as well as get away from her loneliness. In this way she was able to express herself in a very artistic way which is another Transcendentalist belief that art is a good way to express oneself because art can be anything and is not judging. This is how Pamela practiced Transcendentalism.

Pamela was so compelling to me because at the time when she was lonely, she needed to feel a sense of comfort and run away from that loneliness. She did the same thing over and over again everyday and that made her feel alone because she has no real friends to talk to, no family, she only had herself and her job. In order to get away from all those things, she found a sense of comfort from the people she saw at the streets vandalizing. They accepted her, and that was the only thing she needed; is to feel accepted. From there she thought that it was okay to vandalize because she felt free, she felt like she could be herself when she’s painting. She knew that what she was doing was wrong, but she did it anyway because she needed to do something rather than always thinking about loneliness. But at the end, she learned that you don’t have to do something bad in order to feel less alone. After that, she went back to where she came from, but she found out something about herself; she could express herself through art.
ReplyDeleteHow Pamela practiced transcendentalism throughout her life is that when she felt lonely, she found a way to feel occupied, and it was vandalism. She thought instead of coming home every night doing nothing, she would go with her new friends and paint the streets with their artwork. I believe that when she got herself into the situation, she knew that it was wrong, but she forgot all about that because she wanted to feel some kind of thrill in her life. She needed that excitement, that she didn’t have before.

What makes the character so compelling, is her desire to fit in. Since her daily life consist of a plain and dull environment, reenacting her same lonely lifestyle every day, she decided that she needed a change. In doing so she joins a small group of guys that do graffiti, feeling that she could express herself. Though she didn't get caught in the process, when she returned to her normal lifestyle after her group getting exposed, she expressed herself on her own by continuing to use what she learned from graffiti and making images of her own at home.
ReplyDeletePamela practices transcendentalism in this clip, yet i don't believe she realizes it. I think she was just trying her best to spice up her lifestyle. She was tired of her daily routine and wanted to see what else she was actually capable of doing.

One character that really got my attention Milos. Milos had a hard time accepting the death of his dog, and he was in denial. His dog was the only one who kept him company and prevented him from loneliness. He was so used to having someone there to listen to him and out of nowhere he doesn’t have anyone. I can relate somewhat similar by when my dog ran away. My dog was the only one in my house that would always listen to me even if he couldn’t talk back. Just having him there by my side and I do feel like I hallucinated him a couple times. I definitely compelle to the bond he had with his dog.
ReplyDeleteMilos practiced transcendentalism by not accepting that he is truly alone. He kept denying it and turned himself to other things that kept him from being lonely. For example he would continue to play solitaire for hours and hours.

I think that the most compelling character in this film is Domingo. He felt that he was lonely so he ran from his troubles and moved to Australia. Humans have a tendency to run from their problems; however, what makes Domingo interesting is that he was able to become successful. Most people would think highly of domingo because he was able to make the best out of an unfortunate situation. However, the luxurious life that Domingo possesed did not fill the void of loneliness within him. He began surrounding himself with cars and houses and hoped that would help but he still felt lonely. He eventually lost his wealth and was forced to move back to the USA. He then, like many poor people, struggled to live. However, he realized what his flaws were and changed himself.
ReplyDeleteI think that only one of Domingo’s many actions would be considered transcendentalist. He was able to look at himself and see his flaws. He didn’t run from them; however he was able to change himself and make those flaws disappear.

ReplyDeleteI chose to write about Domingo. His story was compelling to me because I could understand how he felt. He also showed me what’s really important in life. He got rich from his business in Australia, but he never really matured and knew what to do with the money he had earned. He quickly blew away all of his money on luxuries. He always felt lonely in life, and seeked a relationship. He traveled the world and had so many luxuries, but didn’t have anyone to share with. He was on top of the world, but he still wasn’t happy. This made me really see that money isn’t everything. Money isn’t real, it doesn’t matter how much of it you have.
ReplyDeleteDomingo practiced transcendentalism by looking within himself and being content with what he was given. After he saw the video of himself chasing a young woman at his sister’s wedding he came to a realization. He knew he needed a change from the way he was living. He realized it didn’t matter that he lost his money. He started to look within himself and evaluate his personal character. He then became a better man for it. Emerson stated that a man shouldn’t focus on the material things. Once Domingo started to not care about having luxuries, he reconnected with his family and lived a happy life.

To me Milos is the most compelling character. I have had my fair share of animals and can connect to his loss. Although I have yet to experience someone close to me dying it is still a thought that often comes to mind. What compels me most about Milos is that he seems like a very reflective person but ends up trying to distract himself by playing cards. Although it is shocking to find someone close to you did whether it be a human or an animal. Milos practiced transcendentalism by being aware of what may or may not be a hallucination and going back and check more than once. By not facing the truth and by distracting himself by playing cards though, he is being the opposite of transcendentalism.

I chose Tom because his life seems easy, but in reality, it is difficult. Since he comes from a family of five, he was very isolated because he was one of the youngest. His family ignored him so he was now going through a phase of self-reliance. He had to go through a lot of things alone, his family was usually busy with themselves while leaving Tom out of it. Being ignored, he had to go through life alone, he had to endure pains with himself, and he has been successful in doing. He may not know he was actually practicing transcendental philosophies, but he may know that he was going to be self-reliant, and that he will probably live a life of independence.

ReplyDeleteMy character is interesting because he himself didn’t know who he even was until he had a successful company and made lots of money. But once the money disappeared, he seemed to forget who he was again. He relates to me because I don’t think I know who I am, and one of my main motivations when I’m older is to make a lot of money.. this movie woke me up because it made me think twice about whether money is really all that. Domingo practiced transcendentalism when he was trying to fit in with different crowds and realized he didn’t know who he was. He knew what his family was like and told himself, he doesn’t want to be like them. So he went through trials of different things realizing that none of those things represented him either. Another time he practiced transcendentalism was when he moved back to the states through one of his ex business partners. Once again he found himself not knowing who he was, but it was different because all his opportunities in life had slipped through his hands. He even considered himself a low life and went back to his fam

I think the most compelling character in the movie is Domingo. He was raised in a religious house, served in the Vietnam War and got rejected by his people. He then moved to Australia and made much money that in the end corrupted him and lost it all. Domingo practiced transcendentalism by living life how one should without have to feel the need to fit in. He realized whatever possessions you hold should not reflect on the type of person you are. Being left with basic essentials, Domingo was able to appreciate things in life, most importantly, himself.

1. What is so compelling about your chosen character?
ReplyDelete-The character that I choose from this film “A room nearby” is Tom the carpenter. What is so compelling him is that he’s like every single human being. I’m pretty sure that at one point in everyone’s life, they feel as if they don’t belong somewhere and feel the need to change themselves in order to fit in and make friends. I been through it before. Back when I just moved to Milpitas, I felt the need to change who I am in order to fit in at my school but I soon realized that I rather be alone and be happy with who I am than being surrounded by a bunch of people and still feel like I’m by myself. Tom tried so hard to fit in, to be that one person everyone else expect him to be but soon he realized that there’s no point in trying to be somewhere that you’re not because if you’re not happy, then what’s the point.
2. How did your character practice transcendentalism in their personal lives?
-He practiced transcendentalism by accepting the problems in his life and learn to live with it. He was too caught up in what other people was saying that he forgot about his own thoughts. But he came to a point where he accepted his loneliness and who he is. He started to be independent and learn that sometimes, it’s better to stand out than to fit in.

I chose Milos because i can relate to him in all sorts of ways. The fact that when he finds out bad news about his dog, he tries to convince himself that it isn’t true. He distracts himself from the topic instead of actually facing it. Milos feels like he is lonely because his only companion is gone, which i feel is quite sad. He doesn’t know how to take control of the problem so he just isolates himself. Milos didn’t know he was practicing Transcendentalism because i feel like he thought he was just grieving for his lost by distracting himself. But only did he know that by trying to avoid the problem, he is just making problems worse for him. Emerson said that you need to face reality and you’re problems and don’t make it seem like it doesn’t exist. When you face your problem, then maybe if it happens again, you can easily get through it.
